There wasn’t an instance all night Monday that the LSU baseball team came to bat with the lead to start a bottom of an inning.

But as the home team on the scoreboard, LSU also didn’t have to come to bat in the bottom of the ninth inning.

So when LSU right fielder Dylan Crews wrapped his glove around a fly ball for the final out in the top of the ninth inning, the Tigers unleashed a celebration on Eugene, Oregon.

LSU defeated Oregon 9-8 in Monday’s winner-take-all NCAA Tournament Eugene Regional championship game.

Members of the Tigers’ team swarmed Landon Marceaux on the mound. He pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and allowed one run.

LSU head coach Paul Mainieri threw his arms up at the end of the game. Mainieri announced before the regional that he would retire at the end of the season.

Mainieri also took time to be with his wife, Karen, and family after the game.

The LSU Tigers advanced to face the Tennessee Vols in the NCAA Tournament Knoxville Super Regional.

With the win against Oregon, LSU, the No. 3 seed in the regional, improved to 38-23 overall. The No. 1-seeded Oregon Ducks ended their season 39-16 overall.

On Sunday, LSU defeated Oregon 4-1 to force Monday’s winner-take-all game.
